An Equation for Academic and Personal Success
01/12/2017

Gifted students have similar social competence as other students, but when compared to their peers, a significant number were found to struggle with interpersonal relationships. The literature suggests that although in most situations, being intellectually gifted is generally an asset socially and emotionally, some evidence reveals that many gifted students express a general lack of competence in social situations. Some plausible explanations for this contradiction include an established discrepancy between gifted students’ advanced intellectual or cognitive abilities and their psychosocial development, whereas others attribute the causes to school-related and/or socioeconomic factors. The present study is an extension of a previous study. Findings revealed that improving emotional intelligence competence improved self-perception in both the scholastic and social domains.
